Episode 02: TONY
“Hey, looks like they are looking for Asian man #3 for this role. It even has a couple of lines!”
“Ah, the infamous Asian man #3 shows up in another production. At least they are not asking you to audition for Dead Asian man #15, or older background Asian man #4…. So, are you going to audition for it?”
“Why not, there isn’t anything else being offered to me. It’s a movie about a cop investigating two rival Chinese drug dealers. One of the gang leaders, accidentally killed innocent Asian #45 and #63 over a gangland-style shooting however the underlying premise is the hero is seeking revenge for his wife’s drug overdose death. Casting is looking for someone to play the sacrificial non-descript Asian man #3 with the lines: Hey you killed my brother!! - Now, you die!!”
“Do they want a Chinese accent with this part?”
“Of course they do! They always expect pidgin English!”
“Should we figure out what is Asian man #3’s backstory is? Do you need to find out more about this character like where he comes from? Who is this guy? Was he abused? Did he grow up in difficult circumstances? Reasons why he is a part of this gang, does he have a family etc.?”
“No, no no, that is not necessary because they don’t really give a shit about Asian man #3. He is an expendable distraction to the “caucasian hero’s” quest in seeking revenge for his wife’s death. Asian man #3 doesn’t actually have a personality or backstory. He exists merely to function as a typical Chinese male villain caricature to serve as roadkill - truly just an obstacle with an invisible existence. Really doesn’t even have to be human if it was up to the writers. Probably just need to fill up some diversity quota to secure financing. Hahaha…”
“Well, that is fucking original. Who writes this shit anyways? It’s always the same old shitty dialogue, isn’t it? Same generic writing, how do they manage to keep this so consistent from year after year? Is this what they think people want to see? Really makes you wonder don’t you….Damn!… So tell me, why are you going for it again?”
“Dude, I ask myself the same question all the time..…”
